HOW WE JUDGE • WINESTATE MAGAZINE TASTING CRITERIA OUR STAR RATING SYSTEM
ADELAIDE HILLS
ADELAIDE HILLS • There’s gold in "them, than hills" and also silver and bronze! The Adelaide Hills region is enjoying some action as both a wine and tourism region lately. Ignore the fires issue, wineries are pleased to invite you to taste their wines. Here we saw excellent results with pinot, chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet, with a growing interest and excellence in alternative varietals.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
WINES OF THE WEST • A nice line-up of WA wines ranging from the warmer Swan Valley and Geographe regions to the cooler Great Southern, Mount Barker and Pemberton southern ones, with the eponymous Margaret River in between. This is a great snapshot of what is "best in the west." As usual sauvignon blanc based wines, chardonnay and cabernet performed best with an honorable mention for shiraz.
MCLAREN VALE, LANGHORNE CREEK, FLEURIEU & SURROUNDS
McLAREN VALE, LANGHORNE CREEK, FLEURIEU & SURROUNDS • One of our favourite regions, Adelaide’s south never fails to disapoint. Always a good supplier of flavoursome wines these last few years has seen a rise in more mid-weight styles, including alternative reds and whites. Here we also saw a great flight of rosé wines and not surprisingly grenache, which this region does best!
NORTH ISLAND • Wairarapa, Gisborne, Auckland & Northland
MICHAEL COOPER RECENT RELEASES • Marlborough stood out in the latest tasting of recently released wines from New Zealand, as the source of top-flight examples of chardonnay, pinot gris, bottle-fermented sparkling wine and pinot noir. The tasting also uncovered several mid-priced, high-quality wines, including pinot gris and chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay, and riesling and merlot/cabernet from the Waipara Valley, in North Canterbury.
