Variable refresh rates • Videogame aficionado John Archer explains why the industry has embraced VRR technology, and why TV manufacturers have struggled to keep the pace

Great Savings

MOVIES YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS IN 2023 • With Hollywood hoping for a post-pandemic bounce-back at the box office, this year's movie slate features returns for the Mission: Impossible crew, John Wick and Adonis Creed, plus a certain professor of archaeology. Team HCC looks ahead, popcorn in hand

Movies 'n' music • This multipurpose AV space hides a full-fat Dolby Atmos system with four subwoofers, but puts its dedicated stereo speakers on display.

Dominus den... • Movies up front, music hardware at the back – this 9.3.6-channel cinema with THX certified speakers aims to cover all bases, reports Mark Craven

WIN! An SVS 3000 Micro subwoofer

Sony shines bright

Home cinema with heart • What better way to put this Marantz high-end home cinema amplifier through its paces than with some high-brow music. Specifically, Winter, from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons (or, as I like to call it, Le quattro stagioni). The trilling of violins, beautifully elucidated by this amplifier's melodious HDAM amplification, is sublime, and I just love the way the strings are dramatically engulfed by a full orchestral storm… and heavy weapons fire.

OLED writ large

All the world's a sound stage • If you've been in a commercial cinema, the chances are at some point the sound you heard was reproduced by JBL speakers. The company has been synonymous with film audio since Al Jolson warbled in The Jazz Singer, and founder James B. Lansing was among the pioneers who helped usher in the era of the 'talkies'.

Champagne supernova • The Sony projector line-up is an all-laser affair this year, from the flagship VPL-GTZ380 and ultra-premium VPL-VW5000ES, to the ageing VPL-VW890ES (HCC #323) and two new additions: the entry-level VPL-XW5000ES (HCC #335), and mid-range VPL-XW7000ES tested here. All are native 4K beamers, because the days of Sony producing Full HD home cinema projectors are long gone.

Small box, big tricks • A mid-range subwoofer from MartinLogan, the Dynamo 800X crams features and flexibility into a compact cabinet. Richard Stevenson is very impressed

Perlisten asks 'R you ready?' • This 5.1 set proves the performance of the US brand's debut S range wasn't a one-off, says Mark Craven

Bravia, you beauty! • Sony's regular OLED TVs now face competition from the brand's own Quantum Dot-enhanced models. But that doesn't stop John Archer enjoying the 55A84K

T+A Solitaire T • The German high-end...
