Esquire Singapore

July/August 2022
Magazine

After winning three Media Publishing Association awards in 2013 and eleven in 2014, Esquire continues to be regarded as a beacon of excellent journalism in Asia with fifteen wins in 2015. We have no idea where we kept the awards, though. Founded in September 2012, the local edition is produced by a crop of respectable writers, photographers, illustrators and collaborators. Known for its powerful storytelling and ground-breaking photography, delivered in its signature wit, Esquire continues to steward men to their best in Singapore and beyond. The birth of Esquire dates back as far as 1933 in the States and since then, the title is known for pushing boundaries with literary giants such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Norman Mailer finding their voice with the magazine.

Esquire Singapore

BACK TO THE FUTURE

SOME DOG STEPPED ON THIS BEE.

ASK ESKY • For all your life-pondering questions, Esquire’s all-knowing resident mascot has the answers.

SHE WANTS YOU TO KNOW • The 90s might’ve been her golden era for falling in love, but Rahat Kapur sure has learned a whole lot more about matters of the heart since then.

MAN TRENDS • In the spirit of nostalgia, a back-to-school edit of luxed-up schoolboy staples.

MAN DOES • Gripping storylines, indie rock music and an Icelandic band to keep you entertained.

JUST EAT IT

JUST DRINK IT

HEALTH ME OUT • What’s hot in health this month, starting with the latest Gucci x Oura ring.

TECH IT OR LEAVE IT • It might be hot right now, but would you Tech It or Leave It? We break down what’s trending in tech this month, kicking off with embracing the unknown.

EVEN YOU CAN MAKE THIS

FIVE MINUTES WITH... • Rishi Naleendra, chef-owner of Michelin-starred Cloudstreet, Sri Lankan restaurant Kotuwa and wine bar Fool.

WHAT ART THOU? • Love the idea of owning art and NFTs but not sure what to buy and why? We got you. This month, it’s all about the nostalgic joys of irreverent celebration.

To the beat of his own drum • Multi-hyphenate Mark Tuan is stepping into his own spotlight, on his own terms.

Virality Killed All the Stars • Has social media diluted the true value of fame as we once knew it? Indran Paramasivam laments.

These Are the Days of Our Lives • Teenhood has its cathedrals. Founts of spiritual deliverance that proffer transcendence. A sanctuary where communication and understanding are sanctified. Pop-punk is one of them, and within its shrine, Montreal’s Simple Plan is among the most-decorated idols. When a band’s music is so precision-engineered to mesh within the soundtrack of a man’s life, you don’t deny its infectious pull. You give into it—you love it.

ALL BACK TO THEIRS • With the ‘90s revival in full swing, Johnny Davis—he was there!—remembers the party decade that fashion and pop culture cannot forget.

Can you Delete Yourself Off the Internet?

NOT ALL SUPERHEROES WEAR CAPES • Kode Abdo, more famously known as BossLogic, is a bona fide builder of worlds. In the ever-teeming digital space, he commands a vast blast radius that includes art work for the biggest names in comic books and by extension, pop culture. Marvel and Disney are only some of the entities that have benefited from the swooning scale of his brush. When the pixels sparkle, you know it’s him. His work rewards both the child and adult in you. Here, he shares with us how art and life can imitate each other in the wildest, most mind-blasting ways.

IF YOU BUY JUST ONE THING • Nostalgia. Colour. Kitsch. Why fuss over subtlety when you can visually uppercut the gawkers with the supersized, super-hued 31-litre Kipling x MTV Art M tote?

THE STUFF OF SUMMER • Like sunburn or condensation clinging to a cold glass, some things just plain scream summer. From...
