Dalmatian history 101 • In honor of Fire Pup Day, we’re putting the spotlight on Dalmatians and how the breed became known as firefighters’ best friend. “In the time of horse-drawn carriages, Dalmatians were useful in clearing paths of the many stray dogs that might otherwise interfere with horses’ travel,” says J. Charles Garvin, president of the Dalmatian Club of America. “When fire departments first started, the fire wagons were pulled by horses. It was natural for Dalmatians to go along with the fire wagons to clear the way and provide protection. They also helped provide companionship for the firemen, who would have many periods of boring inaction between fires.” How paw-some is that?!
