STEP OUTSIDE WITH… SID HILL • Sid Hill is an ecological horticulturist based in St Ives in Cornwall. His design and creative practice focuses on rewilding landscapes, creating edible ecosystems, permaculture and artfully restoring environments. Sid was home educated and grew up on a smallholding, and it was at this early time of life that he learned to grow food, preserve harvests and live with as little negative impact on the planet as possible. He now teaches gardening, helping people to have a positive influence on the climate crisis, and to live more self-sufficiently and in symbiosis with nature.

ROOT + GROW • INSPIRATION FOR LIFE OUTDOORS

Backing dancers • Growing plants for their foliage not only gives your garden movement and texture, it provides lively shapes for your vases too. Cut-foliage specialist Zanna Hoskins of Spindle Flowers reveals the movers and shakers

ELEVATE YOUR PLANTING • Hanging baskets have been a mainstay of municipal displays for decades… it’s time for a chic makeover! We asked the stylish Thomas Broom-Hughes – director of horticulture at Petersham Nurseries – to give it a go

SAVE IT ON A RAINY DAY • Landscape designer Nicholas Dexter shows us how to do the right thing with the wrong kind of rain

a spore subject • Ferns have survived on our planet for hundreds of millions of years – a stint in your garden (or in your living room) should be a doddle. Felicity Penrose of specialist nursery Bowdens talks us through how to care for them and which to go for indoors and out

A NOTE ON PROPAGATING FERNS

PUTTING DOWN ROOTS • Your plot may be small, but there’s always space for a canopy – the key is looking ahead and choosing a tree that will still be thriving in decades to come, says botanist Sally Morgan

INNER CITY LIFE • Make a lasting impression on the urban landscape with a tree that can take the heat

‘We can make this place better. We can regenerate’ • ‘Regenerative’ is a term being used by all manner of growers – but what does it mean and how can we have a go in the garden? We spoke to four people in the know for their take on the biggest trend in horticulture

A cracking time • There’s an autumn nut windfall out there if you know what you’re looking for, says nature writer Tiffany Francis-Baker

COLOURFUL COMPANIONS • Online garden centre Crocus and award-winning garden designer Pollyanna Wilkinson have teamed up to create beautiful bulb combinations for four months of colour
