Preschool-Grade 2 These new books in the Really Wild Families series (2 new titles) blend the feel of picture books with rich nonfiction content. Each story is narrated by a young animal. This "little" animal guides the reader through a day in its life, sprinkling the text with descriptions of the animals' habitat, family structure, diet, behavior, and more. In Little Chimpanzee, the young ape explains, "My dad is the alpha male of our community, which means he's the leader," and goes on to detail what an alpha male does. Sometimes the language is quite sophisticated, but approachable illustrations blanket most pages, giving the titles the appealing look of picture books. Pintos' illustrations make Little Chimpanzee and the chimpanzee community look fun and friendly. The extensive back matter in each book (over 10 pages) is almost enough for an additional volume and includes additional facts, information on conservation, an art project, a quiz (with answers), and another activity or two.
