Welcome

We love March • “Beware the ides of March” was the dire warning delivered to Julius Caesar by a soothsayer as he strolled through the forum (according to Shakespeare). The ides is the 15th of this month and it could – being March, that most fickle of months – go either way for gardeners. It could be Siberian with icy blasts and winds that slice through even the thickest coats or it could be unseasonably balmy with trees unwisely teetering on the precipice of premature flowering. Who knows? Whichever way you look at it, the ides of March is dangerous even without Brutus, Cassius et al running around trying to stab you!

Expert’s choice Early daffodils • The joy of spring is hosts of dancing daffodils, but be mindful where you plant them, says Graham Rice

It has been specially selected to flower in succession from late spring to autumn, ensuring your garden looks its best for the entire growing season. Plant in bold groups for maximum impact. Plants supplied as plugs.

The Full Monty • As ‘middle age’ continues to expand far into what was formerly ‘old age’, this affects what we want from, and how we use, our gardens, says Monty

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence

Clippings • Our roundup of the month’s latest gardening news and views
