GARDENS • SPRING FORWARD Early autumn is the time to buy spring bulbs, such as cheerful daffodils, ranunculus, jonquils and freesias, which can all be planted straight away. Fragrant freesias grow well in the garden for many years, preferring well drained, light soil in a warm, sunny position. Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 15cm and mix some slow release bulb fertiliser into the soil when planting, ensuring the pointed part of each corm is facing upwards. If planting in a pot, select a taller container and use a bulb potting mix for best results.
