Welcome

We love December • The last month of the year: another four seasons over and they have been a bit of a rollercoaster (not just horticulturally). One good thing about having a garden is that every year the slate is wiped clean and we get to do it all again: ideally we don’t make the same mistakes twice and our triumphs still make us happy. Meantime, smile as you are forced to listen to Mariah Carey (again) and when someone insists on watching Love Actually for the seven thousandth time. Soon you will be back in the garden with a heart full of joy and a barrow full of promise.

Expert’s choice Phormiums • Sword-like foliage and constant colour comes as standard with these stalwarts, says Graham Rice

3 FREE* WORTH £29.97 • Trailing Blackberry ‘Black Cascade’ for every reader

The Full Monty • No one doubts the physical and mental benefits of gardening, says Monty, but just why is ‘green medicine’ so good for the mind and soul?

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence

Clippings • Our roundup of the month’s latest gardening news and views

My gardening world Dame Judi Dench

2 for 1 entry Festive favourites • Make great savings using your 2 for 1 Entry Card to visit some of the many gardens in our discount scheme offering seasonal fun for the whole family

Choose an amazing gardening bundle • Save on a yearly subscription to BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine and select a gardening bundle worth up to £167

Fruitful experience • Plan ahead to enjoy your best-ever fruit harvest next year, as Monty offers expert advice on planting, pruning and growing a bounty of delicious crops

Monty’s 3 favourites to plant now • Winter is the ideal time to start off these superb fruits

Monty’s winter pruning tips

Gardening for health Helping hospitals • We all know how scary and stressful hospital visits can be, so what role can a garden play in making things better for people? In the first of his new series on gardening for health, Adam Frost shares personal experiences of how green space can help transform a hospital community

Why do hospital green spaces matter? • After her experience at Lewisham Hospital, RHS Community Development Offcer Alice Cornwell shares the impact a hospital garden can have

“Even through the winter we’re out here – we have barbecues in the snow” • This small tropical garden is a real northern jewel, with confident planting and hand-built structures that led our judges to award it our 2022 Highly Commended prize

Small space entries • This year we were particularly impressed by some gardeners who didn’t quite make the shortlist but share a passion for gardening in tiny plots high above the ground

DOUBLE-FLOWERED HELLEBORES • Buy this exclusive collection of attractive double-flowered hellebores and save up to £40

A winter wonderland • Turn your garden into the star of the Christmas show with Alan Titchmarsh’s guide to planting his festive favourites

Naturally creative • Make your own beautiful decorations using your garden’s winter bounty – Amber Partner shows you how to create easy, elegant and sustainable festive showstoppers.
