Calligrapher and illustrator Toffaletti's (Calligraphy Project Book) latest book begins with a brief overview of different lettering alphabets, the tools needed to practice this art, and a glossary of terms with illustrations. Instructions are provided for creating guides to practice and each alphabet includes example phrases after the full array of letters, so readers can see different combinations of letters as well as some ideas for adding decorative additions. Many examples of borders, embellishments, and other designs are also included. The second half of the book is devoted to projects that will utilize the reader's newfound calligraphy skills, such as notebook covers and greeting cards along with instructions for additional projects such as vases, decorative boxes, and mugs. Exercises to loosen the hand finish out the book, including activities for different types of pens, nibs, and markers. VERDICT With the increased interest in calligraphy and hand lettering over the last few years, this is a welcome introductory instructional volume. Recommended for most public libraries.--Caitlin Loving
