Rare Goods • Sales in New York and Hong Kong saw big spending on masterworks, especially those appearing at auction for the first time. Meanwhile, prices for trendy crypto-art continue to soar.

Reawakenings • Excitement escalated as major international fairs in the United States and Europe returned in person at scales close to those of pre-pandemic times. Sales results at these events suggested that collectors’ appetites did not shrink during lockdowns. In Hong Kong, a boutique event offered an eclectic mix of works, with uneven results.

A VOICE FROM THE SILENCE • An unexploded bomb left in a forest since the Vietnam War wonders at reincarnation. A child at the end of the world converses with a bodhisattva statue about god. Spirits of extinct animals debate the overthrow of humans. These characters populate the moving-image works of Tuan Andrew Nguyen. I caught up with the Ho Chi Minh City-based artist to discuss his recent projects, and how their complexly orchestrated polyphony uncovers hidden narratives, conflicts, and discursive modes of resistance.
