OUT & ABOUT: SIPS AND SNAPS AROUND THE GLOBE

GETTING THERE

TAKE CARE • Wineries around the world are working to provide for people as well as vines.

A HELPING PINT • Brewers have become a big part of their local social fabric and often use their products to do right by their communities. Some of these are ongoing exchanges, like the Dos Californias Brewsters project, a cross-border collaboration between female brewers in Mexico and California; all proceeds from beers produced under the label fund scholarships for women in partnership with the Institute of Technology in Tijuana. The Pink Boots Society is a national nonprofit group that promotes collaborative beers regularly, with profits going to sponsor scholarships and programming. The four beers below offer a taste of partnerships for good.

DESTINATION: DETROIT • A spirit of innovation drives Motown’s uniquely American wine and food scene.

PAIROLOGY: THERE WILL BE BLOOD ORANGE

ON A MISSION TO REDUCE EMISSIONS • Before you reach for that corkscrew, ask yourself, what’s the carbon footprint of the bottle of wine you’re about to open?

COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH: GO FOR A RUM • Or mix the spirit with wine in this classic, near-forgotten Cuban cocktail.

Q&A: MANGA MEETS MONTRACHET • Yuko and Shin Kibayashi, the duo behind graphic novel series The Drops of God, talk about wine and fame.

DRINKS WITH FRIENDS • As the wine world expands, many people are exploring with likeminded groups.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: THIS IS RADICCHIO • Here’s a recipe that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day, but just as lovely any day, really.

FLIGHT SCHOOL: ITALY’S STRONG SPIRIT • Taste your way through fragrant, warming grappa.

VIEWPOINT: UNITED WE STAND • Women’s strength is in the complexity of their stories.

THE NEW WINE WORLD • Climate change is rapidly altering the world as we know it. Get a taste of the impact the global phenomenon is having on viticulture and explore how the wine industry is forging a future.

THE WOMEN WHO MAKE OUR WINE • Through skill, hard work and determination, these 13 female winemakers are true trailblazers who forged their own paths and are making a lasting impact in the world of wine. Here, they share their own words about their vinous voyages and experiences.

RESPONSIBLE SOUTH AFRICA • Many within the country’s wine industry strive to do right for the greater good.

RAISING SUSTAINABILITY IN SONOMA • Meet the forward-thinking visionaries who helped push Sonoma County toward its goal to become the first completely certified sustainable wine region in the world.
