Auction reports

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

BEST OF THE WEST • A great result for the "Westies" with a good recommendation rate and some stars in almost every category. The pick of the bunch here were the cabernet predominant wines and bright mid-weight shiraz.

CENTRAL & WESTERN NSW

HUNTER VALLEY

WINES OF NSW • An excellent strike rate here with few wines that you wouldn't be happy to drink. Across a wide range of micro-climates ranging from warm to distinctively cool, winemakers showed a great appreciation of varietal diversity. Not surprisingly (note: that's not "unsurprisingly") semillons were the heroes, but don't dismiss chardonnay and pinot from the cooler regions, or well crafted Hunters.

MCLAREN VALE, LONGHORNE CREEK, FLEURIEU & SURROUNDS

MCLAREN VALE, LANGHORNE CREEK, FLEURIEU & SURROUNDS • Flavour, flavour, flavour! That's what you get from McLaren Vale and when matched with finesse from the cooler Langhorne & Fleurieu regions it makes for some formidable wines. Whilst you might have to pay a few more dollars to get the highest level of blockbusters these are still many juicy mid-weight wines at lower prices. Look out for great grenache, serious shiraz and surprisingly a new line-up of alternative varieties.

NORTH ISLAND • (Gisborne, Auckland & Northland)

NORTH ISLAND • Wairarapa, Gisborne, Auckland & Northland

JANE SKILTON MW RECENT RELEASES

NEW RELEASES • Always a pleasure! We are seeing very strong results from the excellent 2015 and 2016 vintages for the reds and crisp whites from the 2017 vintage. Everyone wins a prize! Best examples came from the grenache, riesling and $30+ shiraz class.

FANATICAL About Fizz • AUSTRALIA’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH FRENCH CHAMPAGNE CONTINUES TO GROW WITH THE LATEST TRIO OF BUBBLES IN A BOTTLE TO ARRIVE MAKING AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT.

BEST VALUE WINES OF AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

BEST VALUE BUYS - All under $20

MAKING THE MOST OF THE CHINA SYNDROME • Like many other nationalities, the freshness and quality of Australian meats and seafood are a magnet for many Chinese travellers, especially the high-spending new money crowd.
