OBJECTS OF DESIRE

CASACOR MIAMI

Things to do • The end of summer is upon us. Here is a selection of national events to keep the inner warmth alive.

Urbis Drive • Andrew Kerr ignites another motoring year with three explosive-but-practical performance cars.

Prairie vignettes • Images inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and autumn’s visual spell.

Le rouge • Bold, sensual and entirely unmissable: red is not just for roses any more.

Nougat for the soul • In 2014, designer Max Lamb made Marmoreal, a confection-like terrazzo that broke the internet after fashion label Maison Kitsuné used it in the fit-out for its Paris store. Here is our humble ode to this delicious material.

Technophile • Not all tech companies want to steal your data, marginalise your life and make massive, untraceable profits. This little crop of toys and tools will help you give more, consume less and keep safe out in that big ol’ world.

Hot House • This new, North Otago building is not exactly a house… yet the residential world can learn a lot from the luxury lodge’s ‘blend into nature’ attitude towards the breathtaking landscape that surrounds it.

SO/festive • Yes, it is a tad self-congratulatory but, hey… you turn 20 only once! The second of Urbis’ 20th anniversary celebrations took place early in December 2018 at the fabulous SO/Auckland rooftop bar (HI-SO). Urbis and SO/had the honour of hosting some of our favourite design industry stars for sunset drinks and delightful banter.

Inside Story • Tauranga-born designer Lance McGregor has an impressive list of accolades and clients. He opens his New Jersey summer house to show us the objects he loves.

At home in the antipodes • Tracey Ingram speaks to a Spanish-New Zealand couple making a name for themselves in the very traditional worlds of tapas and flamenco.

Music and form • Sharon Stephenson catches up with multi-talented Wellingtonian Andrew Thomas.

DAYS OF TRANQUILITY • This swimming pool at the Berlin home and office of a tourism entrepreneur. For this and more summer-ready, idyllic homes, see the following section.

POISED ON THE RIDGE LINE • A TUTUKAKA HOME WAS BORN FROM A SIMPLE YET IDYLLIC BRIEF: TO RECAPTURE THE RELAXED FEELING OF ENDLESS HOLIDAYS.

A RETURN TO SPLENDOUR • This grand old home exudes a sense of plantation-style luxury: relaxed sunsets and textured, light-filled interiors.

PRUSSIA MEETS PERSIA • Privacy and community, work and play, contemplation and collaboration are all themes explored through the renovation of this 1887 German villa.

SHIP’S AHOY • BUILT AS AN UPSIDE-DOWN SHIP’S HULL, THIS AWARDWINNING HOME IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND BRINGS THE IDEA OF AN ETERNAL, MARITIME SUMMER TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LEVEL.

SUMMER LIVING • THE REVAMPED INTERIORS OF THIS HAMPTONS HOLIDAY HOME RETAIN THE SENSE OF SOPHISTICATION AND SUBTLE FORMALITY FOR WHICH THE AREA IS KNOWN.

TROPICAL ZURICH • AN ART STUDIO AND UNDERGROUND GALLERY HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THIS STUNNING, BRAZILIAN MODERNIST-INSPIRED, ZURICH HOME FOR A HIGHLY CREATIVE COUPLE.

Fluid sketch • Studio Ilio is a London-based industrial design duo renowned for amorphous, sculptural, yet somewhat minimalist, furniture and light pieces made using experimental processes. For this piece –...
