CENTRAL & WESTERN VICTORIA

CENTRAL & WESTERN VICTORIA • A high quality regional judging that reflects what can be achieved in these regions. Unfortunately whilst this might be recognised in Victoria it perhaps does not have the recognition it deserves in other states or overseas.

JUDGES

ITALIAN & SPANISH • A good result for these Mediterranean varieties which we often call "alternative varieties," even though they have been produced for centuries in Europe. Tempranillo seems to have found a home in Australia, particularly in the warmer regions where it thrives and it shows in the results here. Similarly sangiovese performed well along with various interesting varieties such as montepulciano, fiano and arneis. Pinot gris/grigio continues to confuse but fortunately there are some good examples that keep us interested.

JUDGES

BAROSSA VALLEY & EDEN VALLEY

JUDGES

BAROSSA VALLEY & EDEN VALLEY • Always a pleasure! Barossa and Eden Valley continue to shine with high consistency flavoursome wines, often described as "block busters". This judging was no exception.

JUDGES - DAY 1 & 2

CHARDONNAY & BLENDS • A difficult judging with a strong expert panel expecting a lot more than was delivered. Has the pendulum swung too far from the old school ripe and buttery styles to the "new style" of more austere, fresh and lively flavours. The problem is that this is often taken to the extreme where "elegance" equals a lack of flavour.

NEW RELEASES • This was one of our best ever New Release results with an almost 80% recommended rate. Normally this is around 55-60%. It shows that wine makers are lifting the consistency of quality of their wines to even higher levels, which is good news for everybody. Lots to like here and well worth trolling through the list!
