BEYOND THE SCREEN

SHIFTING SKYLINE • On 6 September, five of the world’s leading architects revealed their designs for a high-rise tower, set to transform Auckland’s skyline.

H&M WAVES THE FLAG

NOT SO HOSTEL

DANU KENNEDY • As design director for Parts and Labour, South Island-born Danu Kennedy has a firm foothold in the hospitality design sector of the United States of America.

THE ROOM

Culinary theatre • A new showroom for high-end appliance brands uses design detail to create a truly immersive and tactile retail experience.

CLIENT BRIEF

Desk with a view • Local co-working outfit Generator has launched its fourth location right in the heart of Auckland’s Britomart. Amanda Harkness tours the space to find what makes it different from the fast-climbing brand’s previous iterations.

Long live the Queen • This underutilised, 1860s’ Auckland building, in a prime Queen Street location, has been brought back to life. Its resulting public spaces make use of clever design and well-curated hospitality to revitilise its core.

DESIGNER BRIEF

FEMININE PERSPECTIVES • Unlike most of the building industry, when it comes to interior design in New Zealand, female practitioners outnumber males by at least four to one. Camille Khouri and Amanda Harkness set out to discover what make the business model unique and to chat to a few of those practitioners.

EL EQUIPO CREATIVO • Although superstar Spanish chefs Albert and Ferran Adrià were crucial in the birth of interior design troupe El Equipo Creativo, it is the team’s self-baptised ‘anti-style’ ethos that has given it a serious edge in the hospitality design world. Tracey Ingram travelled to Barcelona to find out more.

LETTING NATURE COOL • Designing buildings that behave as if they were part of nature is a way of thinking that might just help our goal of cooling the planet.

JEROME PARTINGTON • Sustainability Manager – Jasmax

BEYOND THE LAVA LAMP • Global attitudes towards cannabis are changing rapidly. In the process, many nations are having to invent design-driven retail experiences to replace those previously defined by illegality and secrecy. As New Zealand starts to discuss the drug’s future, Simon Bush-King checks out the design requirements of two cannabis retailers, one in Portland and one in Amsterdam.

In the public domain • Arttform’s Paul Baragwanath is an expert in commissioning large-scale artworks for commercial, public spaces. Here, he discusses his trade with Emil McAvoy.

PERSONAL SPACE • Liz Tjahjana is an architect at PAC Studio. She holds a MArch (Prof) degree with first-class honours from the University of Auckland and is also a regular visiting architectural critic at the university. Liz is a design lead across a range of residential and interior projects.
