Inspired by textiles from around the world, twenty-four quilting projects big & small with easy-to-follow instructions for all skill levels.
In Kaffe Fassett Quilts Shots and Stripes, quilt master Kaffe Fassett and coauthor Liza Prior Lucy present twenty-four projects—small and large, beginner and advanced—made with iridescent solid-colored cotton fabrics (called shot cottons) and woven striped cotton fabrics, all photographed in and around his weekend home on England’s southern coast. Inspired by worldwide travels and a plethora of ethnic textiles, including Amish quilts in America, Japanese indigo patched work clothes, and African weavings, the projects featured include full-size bed quilts as well as smaller pieces that can be completed more quickly, such as throws, wall hangings, table runners, and pillows. With Shots and Stripes, Fassett answers the current call for quilts that make bold graphic statements but are not necessarily as time-consuming as some of the work for which he has been previously celebrated.
“Fassett . . . and Lucy, owner of Glorious Color and Fassett’s frequent collaborator, have birthed a book of startling beauty. Beyond producing drooling glances, their book journeys determinedly yet joyfully through twenty-four projects, well conceived and with clear instructions.” —Publishers Weekly

Fassett (Dreaming in Color) and Lucy, owner of Glorious Color and Fassett's frequent collaborator, have birthed a book of startling beauty. Beyond producing drooling glances, their book journeys determinedly yet joyfully through 24 projects, well conceived and with clear instructions. Lucy's designs exploit Fassett's famous fabrics -- not his signature florals but his iridescent, solid-colored cottons ("shots") and his Indian-woven cotton stripes. Blocked for an idea, Fassett writes, he would stare at all his stripes "until something occurred to me." What occurred ranges from small (tote, throw, table runner) to large (82" x 85" pieces) and from easy (for African Stripe, Lucy worked with only two fabrics) to complicated (Rosita Zigzag). Fassett's florals flirt from the backsides of quilts with subdued tops, like Korean Log Cabin. Debbie Patterson photographed the projects in smashing settings (Chimney Sweep rests on a stoop, grey paint revealed through red), complemented by snapshots from Fassett's home town of Hastings, England. Templates and basic techniques for handling shots and stripes are included. Fassett's writing is cheerfully intimate; Lucy's design ideas, colorfully respectful. 100 color illustrations.

Fassett (Glorious Patchwork) is known for his use of color--particularly bright, bold color. In this collection, Fassett and longtime collaborator Lucy focus on projects that feature shot cottons (a solid fabric with an iridescent appearance) and woven stripes. Solids give the projects an undeniably modern feel, but the techniques and designs are grounded in traditional quiltmaking. Standouts include the Long Diamonds quilt, which makes interesting use of the striped fabric, and the African Collage quilt, with its playful, colorful triangles. VERDICT Shot cottons are the latest thing in quilting, Fassett's a big name, and this is a lovely collection with wide appeal for both traditional and modern quilters.
