A vivid, searching memoir of life, love and book-making by a master of the art of picture books.

Ron Brooks grew up in East Gippsland, a country boy with a yen for drawing and observation of the life around him. He became an acknowledged master of the picture-book form, winning acclaim both nationally and internationally for classics such as The Bunyip of Berkeley's Creek and John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat by Jenny Wagner - both in print continuously for over 30 years - and Old Pig and the multi-award-winning Fox by Margaret Wild. Yet success never came easy. In this searching memoir he recreates his life as an artist, husband, father, with all its twists and turns, its pain and joy. Along the way he offers rare insights into the 'secret' process of picture-making and story-shaping. Illustrated with roughs and finished art from his best-loved books, Drawn from the Heart is a classic in its own right.

Australian children's book illustrator Brooks (John Brown, Rose, and the Midnight Cat) is best known to parents of small children, teachers, and school librarians. This humorous, wise, and frank memoir focuses on Brooks's work and how he became involved in the illustration business. Examples of his work are well chosen, nicely reproduced, and well situated within the text, which distills the lessons he found most relevant and useful in his life's most difficult moments. The book offers much insight into the creative process, as well as practical details about the craft and business of drawing and painting that all sorts of artists will find valuable; it would be a shame if such a finely crafted work found no audience outside of graphic designers or aficionados of children's literature. VERDICT As a memoirist, Brooks distills his hard-won wisdom in a style refreshingly free of the disturbing or sordid confessional details prevalent in many other personal stories. An excellent and entertaining book for all readers.--Mark Brooks Woodhouse, Elmira Coll. Lib., NY
