A haunting and suspensful tale, THE LUCKY ONES explores the gray area between good and evil and one woman'sdesperate search for truth in a past full of secrets and lies. Allison is a woman with secrets from her past: a mysterious accident, a lost family, a clandestine medical procedure that changed the course of her life—and those of the other "lucky" children—far more than she ever realised...

They called themselves 'the lucky ones'.

They were seven children either orphaned or abandoned by their parents and chosen by legendary philanthropist and brain surgeon Dr Vincent Capello to live in his idyllic beach house on the Oregon Coast. Allison was the youngest of the lucky ones living a blissful life with her newfound family...until the night she almost died, and was then whisked away from her adopted family forever.

Now, thirteen years later, Allison receives a letter from Roland, Dr Capello's oldest son, warning her that their father is ill and in his final days. Allison decides she must go home again and confront the ghosts of her past. She's determined to find out what really happened that fateful night–was it an accident or, as she's always suspected, did one of her beloved family members try to kill her?

But digging into the past can reveal horrific truths, and when Allison pieces together the story of her life, she learns the terrible secret at the heart of the family she once loved but never really knew.

A vivid and suspenseful tale of family, grief, love and the dark secrets that bind everything together. Tiffany Reisz's latest novel is enthralling to the final page.

As a girl, Allison Lamarque, the 25-year-old heroine of this solid romantic thriller from Rita-winner Reisz (Her Naughty Holiday), was one of seven needy children whom philanthropist and renowned neurosurgeon Vincent Capello took into his house in Clark Beach, Ore., where he lavished love on them. Allison was part of Dr. Capello’s community for five years, until she was pushed down a flight of stairs and wound up in the hospital unable to remember anything about the incident. Her elderly aunt removed Allison from Clark Beach, and in the 13 years since she has had no contact with either Dr. Capello or the other children he fostered. Now Allison receives a letter from Roland Capello, Dr. Capello’s adopted son, who requests that she come back to Clark Beach because his father is dying and is asking for her. Back in Oregon, as Allison tries to reconstruct who pushed her down the stairs and why, she begins uncovering sinister secrets. Well-drawn characters and a satisfying resolution of the mystery make up for the straightforward plot and some clumsy dialogue.
