Grant’s third historical paranormal romance (after Everwylde) takes readers on a high-intensity quest through the medieval British Isles, where witches, warlocks, and hunters fight to keep an evil coven from acquiring ultimate power. Helena is on the run from a coven that kills any witches who refuse to join them. After escaping twice, she’s sure she won’t be so lucky again. While she’s hiding, freezing in a cave, Jarin, a warlock warrior, finds her. Helping her warm up, he realizes he wants to join her fight against the coven, particularly Sybbyl, who has a bone from the First Witch and has used its power to become the coven’s leader. Helena is just discovering her own power and may be the only one who can defeat Sybbyl. A scene of attempted rape feels out of place in the narrative, but readers will still enjoy the exciting battles, fast-growing romance, and intriguing characters both good and evil.
