In her New York Times bestseller Thrive, Arianna Huffington introduced her readers to the importance of sleep in terms of redefining success, through wisdom, wonder, well-being and giving. But the topic seemed to touch such a powerful chord, and seemed to resonate so universally in today's 24/7 fast-paced, always-connected world, that Arianna realized a full book on the critical importance of sleep to our health and lives, and on the long term danger of sleep deprivation on performance and happiness, was needed.
In her new book, Arianna reveals all the ways that our inability to get enough sleep impacts our lives, undermines our decision making, compromises our health, our athletic performance, our work lives, our relationships and even our sex lives, and causes us to lose control over of how we interact with others and engage with the world. She discusses the latest science on sleep, explores the importance of dreaming, tackles how technology changes our sleep cycles, and explores ways to get better and more restorative sleep. Later in the book, she looks at sleep aides, and the role of the sleep industry in compromising our efforts to get a full night's sleep.
She goes on to offer specific tips and strategies to take control of our sleep lives, and learn to make the power of sleep work for us in rejuvenating our brain cells, in regulating our weight, improving our concentration and strengthening our memory skills.

Arianna Huffington, cofounder of THE HUFFINGTON POST, presents a compelling case on the importance of sleep. Narrator Agapi Stassinopoulos provides each fact with clarity, speaking in a slight Greek accent. The urgent need to convince listeners to grasp the severity of the nation's sleep deprivation crisis is evident in Stassinopoulos's tone as the author explains the various sleep studies and scientific data on this topic. How we sleep, the significance of our dreams, technology's pull to keep us awake, and our addiction to the quick fix of sleeping pills are pertinent to the discussion of sleep's vital role in our lives. The material, both interesting and meaningful, is delivered as a plea for listeners to recognize that sleeping well is necessary for good health and a high-quality life. Prompted by a frightening personal experience with exhaustion, Huffington Post founder Huffington (Thrive) synthesizes a vast array of sleep research and provides tips on maximizing sleep time in an increasingly deprived global culture. Noting that this deprivation is often “glamorized and celebrated” among go-getters, Huffington cites figures indicating that sleep-deprived people are less productive at work. She also lists health risks, including heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and obesity, as well as cognitive impairment on par with alcohol consumption. Huffington goes on to explore the history of sleep, from the ancient world to the Industrial Revolution, when sleep began to suffer. For science, she discusses circadian rhythms, sleep stages, and sleep disorders and their treatments. Tips on achieving better sleep habits are presented for different age groups, with parents encouraged to rethink how they approach putting their children to bed, and students to place more emphasis on sleep for a higher GPA. Much advice is familiar—put aside the electronic devices, exercise more, and meditate—but some is less so, including suggestions on how to use the latest sleep-tracking devices and sleep-optimizing hotels. Huffington proves herself a powerful advocate for those suffering from what she identifies as the current “sleep crisis.” Agent: Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, WME.
