"A delightfully funny bit of holiday fare with a marriage of convenience between an audacious lady and a daring gentleman . . . Love and laughter ring." RT Book Reviews

Jane Tindall has never had money of her own or exceptional beauty. Her gifts are more subtle: a mind like an abacus, a talent for play-acting—and a daring taste for gambling. But all the daring in the world can't help with the cards fixed against her. And when Edmund Ware, Baron Kirkpatrick, unwittingly spoils her chance to win a fortune, her reputation is ruined too. Or so she thinks, until he suggests a surprising mode of escape: a hasty marriage. To him. On the surface, their wedding would satisfy all the demands of proper society, but as the Yuletide approaches, secrets and scandals turn this proper marriage into a very improper affair.

"Both playful and profound, and has a subtle, stirring power that will affect you long after you've read the final page . . . Intricate, intimate, and remarkable." —USA Today

"Grabbed me immediately and had me tearing up by about a quarter of the way through. The characterization of the hero and heroine was excellent and the story was well-written with plenty of humor and wonderful dialogue along the way." —All About Romance

Romain’s third holiday historical (after Season for Surrender), set in 1819 London, introduces a dark suspense element. Thomas Turner, a nefarious ex-convict, is bent on destroying the marriage and the reputation of Edmund Ware, Baron Kirkpatrick, and his wife, Jane. The Wares’ marriage is built upon a shaky foundation—Jane needs her dowry to settle a massive gambling debt—but they secretly harbor deep, heartfelt feelings for each other. They just need to overcome their respective personal problems and mutual feelings of unworthiness. Before they can even begin, Thomas, passing himself off as a distant friend of Jane’s mother, finagles his way into Jane’s good graces. Edmund fears the man will indeed ruin him by way of her, because for all appearances she is beguiled. Meanwhile, the marriage begins to unravel. Romain has plenty of wit, but not enough to overcome an insipid plot. Agent: Paige Wheeler, Folio Literary Management.
