January • In January temperatures are at best around 7C, there can be cold north-easterly winds, and air frosts, which can make gardening challenging. But it’s also a month where the earliest flowers, snowdrops and hellebores, emerge in our borders, wintersweet flowers appear on bare branches and we can sow the first seeds indoors.

February • This month the mornings get noticeably lighter and there are the first signs of spring from early bulbs such as daffodils and crocus. It can also be colder than January, but there’s still plenty to do in the garden, from pruning buddleia to sowing seed indoors.

March • March is a time for action in the garden, as spring gets closer. The lawn needs attention after a long winter and there are plenty of veg seeds that can be sown now, from carrots outdoors to tomatoes undercover. Although it can still be bitterly cold, we will also see lots of colour emerging in the borders from daffodils, primroses and the first of the spring blossom.

April • Spring is an exciting time to be in the garden and there’s plenty to be done, from potting up new plants for ponds and putting up nest boxes, to sowing annuals for summer colour. It’s also a good month to celebrate glorious tulips and the first delicious spring harvests of crops such as rhubarb and asparagus.

May • This month the days are noticeably longer and the increase in daylight means plants are bursting into growth. With the weather and soil warming up, it’s a good time to sow many vegetables direct, plant up hanging baskets and get your borders looking their best ready for the beginning of summer.

June • This month we can celebrate the longest day of the year and, hopefully, summer evenings spent out in the garden enjoying the results of all our hard work. It’s a good time to keep on top of all the extra growth, pruning early flowering shrubs, tying in roses and deadheading regularly, as well as planting containers that will flower through the summer and making the most of early crops such as broad beans.

July • Enjoy the bounty of July as summer hits its peak – veg crops such as courgettes and peas are ready to harvest and the borders are blazing with colour. This month it’s important to keep on top of watering and deadheading to keep displays looking their best as well as planning ahead. Now is also a good month to plant autumn-flowering bulbs such as nerines.
